|
|
Tad said to start posting the questions he wrote in class as topics here so I guess I'll start off.
This was one of the last questions he wrote down and I found it especially interesting. We had just started discussing it in class and I think it is a topic that should be continued.
What exactly is the difference between identifying with something vs. calling it your ethnicity? Is there one? What defines it? Ect.. ect.. ect. |

identity
noun ( pl. -ties)
the fact of being who or what a person or thing is
ethnicity
noun ( pl. -ties)
the fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition
Smart ass dictionary answer aside, I think it's much more common for ethnicity to be a part of identity instead of the other way around. There are, obviously, exceptions to this. For example, native americans. Some tribes believe that part of your identity is your spirit guide (discovered through a vision quest). In this way, identity becomes a part of culture. |
