Hi, all -- I've finally made it back to Madison, Wisconsin and want to thank you all for my delightful visit. As I prepare to meet the seventy-two students I'll have in my environmental history course this semester, I find myself wishing I would find your faces sprinkled among them. I have been bragging about your enthusiasm and brilliance to all my colleagues, and I told Bill Cronon himself about all the fascinating questions you asked and observations you made about his work and the field at large.
Some of you might be interested in reading this essay: http://www.williamcronon.net/writing/Cronon_Kennecott_Journey.pdf
It's a version of the first lecture Bill gives in his environmental history lecture and is, in many ways, a version of the final project for your class. He wanders through a place asking the kinds of questions environmental historians ask to make a place come alive.
As you continue your exploration of environmental history, I hope you won't hesitate to get in touch. It makes me so, so, so happy to think of you digging into this stuff as you work with Rachel and your other history teachers to make sense of how the past gave us the world we've got.
Fondly,
Brian |
