For some reason, I was missing pages 4 and 5, but from what I gathered from the rest of the reading, Wilhelm was in quite a predicament.
I now understand why he was trying to act as a mediator between Austria-Hungary and Russia. It was in his best interest, as well as the interest of everyone else in Europe (except possibly Serbia), to do the best he could to limit a full-scale conflict across Europe. Nobody wants to go to war with one’s own cousin, and it seemed that “Willy” and “Nicky” had a close relationship, from the messages we read. Wilhelm couldn’t defy the treaty he signed with Austria-Hungary, so he did the best he could to avoid a war with Russia. When it came to Wilhelm’s attention that the czar had played him in order to get a head start on mobilizing his army, the Kaiser took the only other option; war. |
