Still can't figure what draconian measures exactly means. all I know about its characteristics are harshness and strictness.
From a contemporary perspective, I think that the national educational system introduced by Japanese government during the Meiji Restoration period would be irrational and harsh. Today’s schools in especially the US in where the Scopes Trial took place turned into institutions for purely educational purposes.
However, during the Meiji period when japanese schools would rather be means of its youth enlightenment about patriotism and loyalty than stand for an educational institution, it seems reasonable that the Japanese government controlled over the schools and implanted a civic ideology centered around the emperor for their political purposes. Therefore, I can't tell that inculcate national pride in its subjects, the measures that the government used to inculcate national pride in its subjects was Draconian. As Anna pointed out, it was more likely to be the matter of authoritarian. |
